Whole cumin belongs to the caraway family and are traditionally used whole in rice as well as vegetable recipes. It has a very distinct deep, slightly spicy flavor and adds a bit of a crunchy texture to the recipe. It is also a staple in Mexican cuisine and you will see it often in tacos, quesidillas, etc. Personally, I love it on my cheese bread and pizza base, it enhances the flavor of all the other ingredients.
